York

York is a grand walled city located at the confluence of the River Ouse and the River Foss. Although not politically part of North Yorkshire, it would not be appropriate to have a guide to the area without mentioning it.

Historically York was England's second city until the industrial revolution created larger urbanisations. This can be seen by the Second son of King or Queen being known as Duke of York, while The Archbishop of York is the second highest in the country.

York was once a Roman settlement known as Eboracum. It later became the main city of the Kingdom of Northumbria when it was given it's Viking name Jorvik which later became York.

The city is dominated by York Minster, one of the finest churches in the country. The first church (wooden)at that site was built in 627 for the coronation of the King of Northumbria. Later rebuilding and modifications have led to a number of architectural styles being present in the York Minster of today. These include Gothic and Perpendicular styles. It has some wonderful features including the West Window, constructed in 1338, the Great East Window, which is the largest expanse of medieval stained glass in the world. It also has a renowned Rose Window.
